Greenpeace study on the quality of public transportation in Germany

General information:

Client:
Greenpeace e.V.
Period of time:
2025

Planning Cases:

  • Collection and preparation of various schedule data
  • Comparison of departures based on schedule data for the years 2023 and 2025
  • Analysis and assessment of public transport quality using the public transport quality classes in GOAT

Overview

The project examines the quality of public transport in Germany, based on open schedule data from Delfi e.V.. It analyses developments in the 30 largest independent cities for the years 2023 and 2025. The study, commissioned by Greenpeace, uncovers inequalities in public transport provision, including the integration of on-demand services, and aims to provide a data-based assessment to promote the expansion of sustainable mobility.

Goals

  • Recording the number of departures in selected cities for 2023 and 2025 to track changes.
  • Classification of public transport quality based on public transport quality classes at the level of municipalities and districts using the WebGIS GOAT.
  • Identifying the need for action for a sustainable transport transition, which provides important impetus for a future-oriented design of local public transport.

Results

  • In some regions, positive developments are evident, such as an expansion of services or the introduction of on-demand services that improve regional mobility.
  • However, around 26 percent of Germans have rather poor access to public transport where they live.
